5 Google Hangouts to learn something new


Google Hangouts is one of the best video chat and conference services, but it's easy to forget that it's not just for talking to friends privately. There are tons of public, open Hangouts every day that anyone can join, and many of them can teach you something interesting and new, expose you to new ideas, or just help you relax and live a little. Here are a few of them. 

Language Practice Hangout
The Language Practice Hangout Community at Google+ was built by and for people who want to learn new languages from people who actually speak them natively, without spending a ton of money. By joining, you get access to a number of sub-communities specifically for people looking to learn specific languages, like English, German, Mandarin Chinese, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, and several more. 

The community is well over 21,000 people strong, and hosts weekly live Google Hangouts where you can join other native speakers in a discussion to help boost your language skills through common conversation. They even have a well packed Google Calendar of events and hangouts here. Best of all, everything is free because it's built by a community of people looking to help each other and, of course, learn something new. 

ChefHangout
If you've always wanted to go to cooking school but never had the opportunity, ChefHangout may be perfect for you. Unlike some of the other regular hangouts here, ChefHangout isn't free, but it is a bona fide cooking class with a select number of participants and a real trained chef leading the class inside a kitchen using professional equipment. Courses usually run about $20, and you can see the upcoming class list and schedule on their site. Whether you're interested in learning to make vegetarian or vegan Japanese dishes, cook with fall ingredients, learn to roast a chicken or a turkey, master your knife skills, or something else, ChefHangout either has had or is likely planning a class on it. 

Right now, there's an upcoming introduction to cajun-style cooking scheduled for October 5th, a fall-cooking class that'll focus on fresh autumn soups and salads on September 21st, and a few more later on. If you're already at home in the kitchen and want something to test your skills a bit more, or you have friends you may want to learn alongside, check out their Master Series, which requires a minimum of five people in each class and aims to teach more advanced cooking skills-all using Google Hangouts as your primary learning tool. 

Maker Camp
We mentioned Maker Camp back at the beginning of the summer when it started, and while it's definitely winding down now, we have no reason to believe the folks at Make won't do it again next year, or even do similar Hangouts and events in the fall or winter. In fact, the last Maker Camp hangout for this summer is today at 11am Pacific, so make sure to join the Google+ community and RSVP for the final event: A field trip to Pixar!)

NASA Science and Astronomy Hangouts
The NASA page over at Google+ is worth circling, if not for all of the amazing photos and historical tidbits they post, but also for their almost weekly Google+ Hangouts with their readers on topics including space exploration, living in space, and climate change and weather, to name a few. In many cases, the Hangouts are just live on air, meaning you can watch them from Google+, submit your questions, and have them answered on air, but in other cases you can actually join the panel, be brought into the show, and participate in the discussion or ask your questions in-person. 

Best of all, the discussions are always open to the public for anyone to join. At the time of this writing they don't have any on the docket (they just finished one on Wildfire and Climate Change), but you can check their calendar here to make sure you don't miss anything. 

The Hangout Comedy Club
If you're looking for a hangout that's a little less informative and a little more relaxing, you may want to check out the newly announced Hangout Comedy Club, which you can join live as it happens (the first one was yesterday!) to hear stand-up comedians delivering jokes and punchlines from the comfort of your desk or couch. The series is actually a partnership between Google and the charity Comic Relief, and your real-time "lols" will turn into big bucks for the charity itself. Google describes it like this: 

We're partnering with the UK charity Comic Relief to bring you the first online comedy club-the "Hangout Comedy Club." We've created a clever gizmo called the "Laughometer," which will measure how much you enjoy the show and turn your lol's into an optional donation to Comic Relief. They use the funds they raise to tackle the root causes of poverty and social injustice. 

To be part of the Hangout Comedy Club, simply join a Google+ Hangout hosted by one of our famous comedians, including Katherine Ryan, Sanderson Jones and Joey Page. Just like a real comedy club, if you're brave enough, you can join the front row with up to eight others. If you'd rather sit out of sight, join a Hangout, add your friends, and watch from the safety of the back row. To us, that's a pretty good way to raise money, and a great use of the technology. Besides, it's fun, too. 

Bonus: Hangouts Against Humanity
Finally, if you're bummed that some of the ones above are either ending or don't meet your definition of fun, maybe this is more up your alley. The popular party card game Cards Against Humanity is a lot of fun to play with your friends, but if your friends don't live nearby, or you can't get together to play, you might consider starting a Google Hangout with them and playing Hangouts Against Humanity, a version of the game that you can fire up inside a Google Hangout. You can circle the Hangouts Against Humanity Google+ page here to stay up to date on its development, and join the Google+ community here. From there you can get involved, join or host a game, and in general just have a great time. 

Hangouts is great for talking to friends, but you can see it's also great for learning new things, keeping up with the news, meeting people you may never have known, and having a little fun at the same time. These aren't the only uses for hangouts either, and you can always use previously mentioned GPHangouts to find public hangouts hosted by individuals if you're really daring. 

Our suggestion if you're looking for more is to poke around the Google+ Communities page and see which communities have regular hangouts on-air, even if they're just broadcasts and you can't get in on the actual panel, you can usually interact with the hosts and join the conversation.

Tech to keep texting when phone‘s battery dies

Internet-of-things! Researchers, led by an Indian-origin scientist, have developed a new technology that lets wireless devices communicate with each other without relying on batteries or wires for power.

The new communication technique, called "ambient backscatter," takes advantage of the TV and cellular transmissions that already surround us around the clock. 

Two devices communicate with each other by reflecting the existing signals to exchange information. The researchers built small,battery-free devices with antennas that can detect, harness and reflect a TV signal, which then is picked up by other similar devices. 

The technology could enable a network of devices and sensors to communicate with no power source or human attention needed. 

"We can re-purpose wireless signals that are already around us into both a source of power and a communication medium," said lead researcher Shyam Gollakota, from the University of Washington. 

"It's hopefully going to have applications in a number of areas including wearable computing, smart homes and self-sustaining sensor networks," said Gollakota. 

"Our devices form a network out of thin air. You can reflect these signals slightly to create a Morse code of communication between battery-free devices," said co-author Joshua Smith. 

The technology can also be used for communication - text messages and emails, for example - in wearable devices, without requiring battery consumption. 

The researchers tested the ambient backscatter technique with credit card-sized prototype devices placed within several feet of each other. 

For each device the researchers built antennas into ordinary circuit boards that flash an LED light when receiving a communication signal from another device. 

Groups of the devices were tested in a variety of settings, including inside an apartment building, on a street corner and on the top level of a parking garage. 

They found that the devices were able to communicate with each other, even the ones farthest from a TV tower. The receiving devices picked up a signal from their transmitting counterparts at a rate of 1 kilobit per second when up to 2.5 feet apart outdoors and 1.5 feet apart indoors. 

This is enough to send information such as a sensor reading, text messages and contact information. 

It is also feasible to build this technology into devices that do rely on batteries, such as smartphones. It could be configured so that when the battery dies, the phone could still send text messages by leveraging power from an ambient TV signal.

Facial recognition tech to nab criminals launched in India

US-based data analytics and business intelligence solutions firm Voice of Big Data (VOBD) with offshore in India said it would soon launch its flagship product 'Facial Signature' before the next quarter.

VOBD claims it would be one of the first players in India to launch 3D facial recognition productthat could help police and investigating officials to identify criminals using the data analytics tools. The company representatives at a press conference in Hyderabad on Friday said VOBD would set up its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hyderabad.

The company said 'Facial Signature', which is currently in Beta testing phase, will be launched first in the US market. "The product has already gained recognition in the US and Indian markets. Though we are yet to launch, we have three clients in the US. In India, we have helped a few police stations to solve their cases within a few hours," said VOBD chief executive Srini Kishan.

The firm has already invested two lakh US dollars in the project and is looking to invest 14 lakh US dollars by March 2015 and 6 lakh US dollars by March 2014.

The company claims that the accuracy of "Facial Signature' is around 90%. The algorithms used by the application can recognise the 80 nodal points on a person's face making it possible to recognise a person in a disguise or wearing a 'Burkha'.

Currently the VOBD's Hyderabad team has 65 employees consisting of 20 data scientists. It is planning to hire 80 more data scientists by the year end. "Hyderabad has the required talent we are looking for. We plan to hire more data analysts as the Hyderabad office will be our Research & Development headquarters for the APAC region," said BLV Rao, chief technology officer.

Citing an example, Kishan explained as to how VOBD was successful in aiding a local police station nab a thief who was disguising herself as a student and robbing electronics from hostels.

"We have also aided the police in analysing the 25 terabytes data they had accumulated in the Dilsukh Nagar bomb blasts case," said Karuna Gopal, advisor for VOBD.

iPhone 5S in gold colour spotted in leaked photo

Apple is widely expected to launch its upcoming flagship smartphone iPhone 5S at an event on September 10. The company is said to be adding colour to its top-end line-up this year, with rumours pointing towards a goldcoloured handset to be added to existing line of smartphones in white and black hues. Now a leak photo adds some credence to this speculation.

French tech website Macboutic has leaked images of the back panel of the iPhone 5S in gold colour. The photos do not have the Apple logo on the rear and the website has said it has deliberately "blurred out" the same. Tech grapevine says that this may have been done to protect the identity of the sources who leaked this rear case to the website.
This report comes just hours after KGI Securities analyst Ming-ChiKuo, who has accurately leaked several details about iPhones and iPadsin the past, said that Apple will launch the next iPhone in champagnecolour.

Kuo also said that the upcoming iPhone 5S will come with a 128GB, which will make it just the second Apple mobile device to have this much storage capacity after the fourth-generation iPad. He also wrote in a research note that the Home button in the upcoming iPhone will be made using sapphire and incorporate fingerprint recognition technology. Apple acquired Authentec, a company working in fingerprint recognition technology, in 2012.

Kuo also says that the next-gen iPhone will be powered by an ARMv8 architecture-based A7processor that will increase computing power by 20% over its predecessor. Other details suggested by Kuo include 1GB RAM and camera with f2.0 aperture and dual-LED flash.

Google goes down, web traffic takes a dive

Google's services, including the popular Google Search, suffered a rare outage on early Saturday morning. The outage was noticed around 4.20am IST and lasted for around 5 minutes. All Google services were disrupted. If a user tried to access Gmail or Google Search, the web browser returned 502 error.

While the outage lasted just minutes, it caused a flurry of tweets on Twitter.

"I wonder how many people checked their wifi connection first before realizing it was Google that was down," a Twitter user said.

Around one hour later, GoSquared, a web analytics firm, said that it noticed a 40% dip in the pageviews.

"Google.com was down for a few minutes between 23:52 and 23:57 BST on 16th August 2013. This had a huge effect in the number of pageviews coming into GoSquared's real-time tracking — around a 40% drop, as this graph of our global pageviews per minute shows," noted GoSquared. "That's huge. As internet users, our reliance on google.com being up is huge."

Google's services dashboard that monitors and shows the status of Google services had a pink dot in front of each one, indicating that they were offline for the said duration. Clicking on each dot, revealed a generic message confirming the outage.

For example, the tab for Gmail noted, "We're aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a significant subset of users. The affected users are able to access Gmail, but are seeing error messages and/or other unexpected behavior. We will provide an update by 8/17/13 6:07 AM detailing when we expect to resolve the problem. Please note that this resolution time is an estimate and may change. The incident lasted 1-5 minutes."

Around ten minutes after the outage was reported, Google engineers added to the dashboard that all problems had been resolved and the services were running fine.

Samsung Hennessy Gives Flip Phone Another Go

One might have considered that the trend of flip-phones had faded since 2005, but the Samsung does not think so. After its attempt with Galaxy Folder, it has now made another Android-based smartphone, SCH-W789 Hennessy, which is now up on its Chinese website. The Hennessy sports two 3.3" touchscreen TFT display with HVGA (320x480) resolution. Since it is powered by Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) it has three capacitive buttons for menu, home, and back functions.  Under the hood this dual-SIM phone packs in a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor with 1 GB of RAM. While the internal memory remains a mystery, a microSD slot has been packed in for external storage. For photography, there is a 5 MP rear camera, but no front snapper.

The phone is available in China, but its availability for other countries is not known. Samsung seems to trying really hard to bring back the past, but will the users go for a Clamshell design in the year 2013, only time can tell. By 2029, computers will match human intelligence

Ray Kurzweil has been described as the "ultimate thinking machine" and a "restless genius" . Currently director of engineering at Google, he is credited with a slew of inventions, which include a music synthesizer and a machine that could read to the blind (the first customer was Stevie Wonder). A high-profile public campaigner for Artificial Intelligence, he has predicted that by about 2030, technology will advance so much that for every passing year, one year will be added to human life by controlling genes and having nanobots in the bloodstream fighting infections.

A little-known part of his history is that as a 19-year-old he came under the influence of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, after learning about him from the Beatles.

He learnt Transcendental Meditation and has kept it up since "though not regularly". He delved into Eastern philosophies and his bestselling books like 'The Singularity is Near' and the latest 'How to Create a Mind' have sections on "western versus eastern ideas". In an email interview with Subodh Varma, the 65-year-old Kurzweil throws light on the basics of Artificial Intelligence.

What is 'Artificial Intelligence'? Do you include human emotions in 'intelligence' or in 'consciousness'?
Artificial Intelligence is the science of creating computers that can perform tasks that we associate with human intelligence. Our ability to understand and respond appropriately to high level emotions is the cutting edge of human intelligence and the most intelligent thing that we do.

Being funny or loving or sexy are very sophisticated behaviours. We want computers to have these capabilities also so that they can interact with us in helpful ways. Understanding emotion is key to understanding language and language is key to understanding knowledge.

How far have we progressed towards developing AI?
Recent progress has been impressive. IBM's Watson computer is able to play the TV game of Jeopardy! which is a broad task involving complicated natural language queries which include puns, riddles, jokes and metaphors. For example, Watson got this query correct in the rhyme category: "a long tiresome speech delivered by a frothy pie topping." It correctly responded "What is a meringue harangue." Watson got a higher score than the best two human players combined. Watson got its knowledge by reading Wikipedia and other encyclopedias, a total of 200 million pages of natural language documents.

Another good example is the self-driving car from Google . These cars have driven a half million miles without human drivers and accidents . You can also ask questions of your cellphone by using Apple's Siri or Google Now. We also have good models of how the human neocortex processes information and we can use these biologically inspired algorithms to build intelligent machines. That is what I am doing now at Google.

You predict that by 2045 'singularity' will be achieved. What does that mean?
One critical date is 2029. It has been my consistent prediction that by that date computers will match human intelligence and pass the "Turing test," meaning that they will be indistinguishable from human intelligence . Once they can do that they will necessarily exceed human intelligence because they will be able to read everything on the web and every page of every book. Consider that Watson does not read as well as a human but it makes up for that by reading more pages - 200 million to be exact. I would also point out that the advent of intelligent machines is not intended to compete with biological humans or to displace us but rather to enhance us. 

We are already enhanced by the devices we carry around and their ability to connect with computer intelligence in the cloud. We will do that directly from our brains by the 2030s. These technologies progress exponentially, doubling in power about every year. That means that by 2045 we will have multiplied our intelligence a billion fold by merging with the AI we are creating. That is such a profound transformation that we borrow this metaphor from physics and call it a singularity.

Can AI become superior to human intelligence? Will it threaten humanity as feared by many?
I would point out that we are not talking about an invasion of intelligent machines from Mars. We create these tools to extend our own reach. That is the whole point of technology. So it will not be human versus machine. Machines are already enhancing our intelligence and that will only increase in the future.

This is a very democratizing technology. A couple of kids in a college dorm room with their thousand dollar notebook computers created Google. The same was true of Facebook. A kid in Africa with a smartphone has access to more information than the President of the United States had 15 years ago. That being said, technology has always been a double-edged sword. Fire kept us warm and cooked our food but was also used to burn down our villages . So, all technologies have a dual creative and destructive potential. But there is no question that we have been helped more than we have been hurt. Just look at how human life expectancy has gone up.
